VOCAL EXPRESS

PRIVATE SESSION  (in person or Skype)

1 single 60 minute session

This one hour session covers the following:

  • Somatic Voicework technical exercises
  • Breathing exercises to help support your sound, correct posture and align to sing with freedom, warm ups for the voice, technical exercises to relax your tongue, jaw, laryngeal and neck muscles
  • Vocal Health tips
  • Listen to your recordings and examine promotional materials, website and social networking sites.
  • Lesson may also include performance a song and technique tips
  • How to treat your career like a business and establish a game plan to help you reach your goals

 

VOCAL TUNE UP

PRIVATE SESSION  (in person or Skype)

4 week course

(45 or 60 minute sessions)

Julie will assign specific vocal exercises that will help your voice improve in a matter of minutes. During the first session, she will lay out the steps that you will take to reach your fullest potential. 

Lessons include:

  • Introduction to the Somatic Voicework Method 
  • Breathing exercises to help support your sound
  • Correct posture and alignment to sing with freedom
  • Warm-ups for the voice
  • Vocal health secrets
  • Focus on 2 songs (covers or originals) of contrasting styles
  • Learn how to apply the technique to the song to help you sing your best

 

STYLE DEVELOPMENT

PRIVATE SESSION  (in person or Skype)

4 week course (or single session)

Learn how to sing in 2 styles of your choice in 4 sessions.

Styles: Pop, Rock, Jazz, Blues, Folk, R&B, Classical, Broadway and more.

 

PERFORMANCE SKILLS

PRIVATE SESSION (in person only)

This course is for students who are preparing for auditions and live shows.

Classes will include:

  • Vocal warm-ups
  • Development of expressive, natural gestures and stage moves that fit your musical style.
  • Microphone technique
  • How to prepare mentally and physically for a live show or audition
  • How to pace a set
  • How to work with a sound engineer
  • How to use effects pedals

 

THE ART OF JINGLE SINGING

PRIVATE SESSION  (in person or Skype)

The more versatility you have, the more work you’ll get. As a studio singer, you're expected to sing in the style of many artists ranging anywhere from Katy Perry to Feist. These sessions will teach you how to become a vocal chameleon.

  • We will explore the following styles: Pop, RnB, Musical Theater, Folk, Rock, Classical, Soul, Blues, Jazz
  • Learn how to create harmonies and background parts
  • How to alter your the sound of your voice
  • Sound-a-likes of various styles
  • How to record yourself effectively
  • How to interact with composers
  • Understanding the business

 

HARMONY SINGING

Learn to create beautiful harmonies.

Classes will include:

  • Back Up Singing secrets
  • How to hold your part
  • How to write and improvise harmonies
  • Vocal arranging and analysis
  • How to get gigs singing backup 
  • How to blend with others  
  • Techniques for recording background vocals

 

JUMPSTART FOR THE EMERGING ARTIST

6 week course (or single session)

This course is perfect for vocalists who are ready to take their careers to the next level. 

This course includes:   

  • Vocal technique 
  • Basic theory and piano
  • Songwriting and arranging
  • Intro to recording software and basic production

  • How to work in the studio
  • Working with a band  
  • How to book shows

 

FUNDAMENTALS OF JAZZ SINGING

PRIVATE SESSION  (in person or Skype)

Julie is a faculty member at New School University where she teaches jazz voice. She holds a Masters in Jazz Performance from New England Conservatory. 

4 week course (or single session)

(45 or 60 minute sessions)

Sessions include:

  • Warm-ups & basic vocal techniques
  • Exploration of interpretation and emotional intent
  • Analysis of legendary vocalists ranging from Ella, to Nat, to Sarah, to Frank.
  • How to tell a story and make a song your own
  • Scat singing and improvising techinques
  • How to write out a chart
  • Basic jazz theory and chords

 

COLLEGE APPLICATION PREP

PRIVATE SESSION  (in person or Skype)

(Jazz Vocalists only)

4 week course (or single session)

(45, 60 minute sessions)

These sessions are designed for the vocalist who is preparing to audition for college jazz programs. Students who have studied with Julie have been accepted in top music programs including New England Conservatory, New School University, Berklee and City College of New York.

Sessions include:

  • Repetroire study and development
  • Chart writing and arranging
  • How to lead a band and talk down a tune
  • Vocal technique and warm-ups
  • Improvisation exercises
  • Introduction to scatting singing and bebeop
  • Focus on 3 songs of contrasting styles: medium swing, blues and ballad
